Cambodian Cultural Festival

Thank you for coming to our 2014 festival. We are currently in the process of deciding on place/date/time for festival 2015. In the meantime, enyoy the picture gallery here.

 

 Also, Miss Cambodian Pageant planning is in a full swing. Tickets are sold-out. Please contact us if you want to come so that we can arrange it. If you already bought the ticket, thank you. Please arrive no later that 6:30 PM on January 3rd. We will start the event promptly at 7:00 PM.

When is Cambodian/Khmer New Year 2014?

The 2014 Khmer New Year Days fall on the 14, 15, and 16 of April. On April 14th at 8:07 AM, it marks the end of Buddhist year 2557 BE (Buddhist Era – based on the Lunar Calendar) and the start of New Year 2558, the year of Horse. The New Year’s angel of this year is Koreakak Tevy, the second daughter of Kabil Moha Prum. Her hair is adorn with Angkeabos flower hairpin. She carries a sword with her right hand and a cane at the left. Her vehicle is tiger. Her favorite food is cooking oil.

Bonn Chrot Preah Nangkol (The Royal Ploughing Ceremony)

In America, there is a groundhog day to predict how many more weeks in winter till spring. In Cambodia, there is a royal ploughing to predict crop yields for the following harvest season.  The Royal Ploughing Ceremony, known in Khmer language as Bonn Chrot Preah Nangkol, is a ritual rooted from Hinduism. For Cambodia, the ceremony marks the beginning of the rice cultivation season. The ceremony is usually performed by the royal family headed by the King and Queen, attended by high ranking government officials, foreign diplomats, and Cambodian citizen from around the country.

Sam Relief  Dec 2012 Newsletter

Replica of Angkor Wat

We have bought a replica of Angkor Wat (picture shown above). It is a sculpture made out from stone, by a sculptor in Pursat province, Cambodia. It is 1.3 meter long, 1.1 meter wide and .35 meter high. It took more than 2 months to complete the sculpture. Click the picture to enlarge.


Phare Ponleu Selpak

Phare Ponleu Selpak (website: www.phareps.org) is a Cambodian association providing artistic activities to children and adults around the Battambang vicinity. The artistic fields are: performing arts (circus, theater, dancing, music), visual arts (cartoon animation, painting contemporary, illustration and graphic design) and social actions (governmental school pre-school through high school, child care center, and transitional youth house).
